Tarnikant Barman, a Zilla Parishad candidate from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Dinhata, has been arrested by the Crime Branch of the Cooch Behar Police, State, Dilip Ghosh raises question.
The arrest comes after Barman switched parties and joined the BJP following his denial of a ticket from the Trinamool Congress party.
According to the police, Barman's arrest is related to a 2019 case of attempted murder. The sudden arrest has raised eyebrows and triggered a protest from Coochbehar North MLA Sukumar Roy and Tufanganj MLA Malti Rao Roy, who visited the police station to express their dissent.
Dilip Ghosh, one of the national vice presidents of Bharatiya Janata Party who was present at the scene, alleged that the Trinamool Congress was utilizing the police and government employees to secure an advantage in the upcoming elections.
Ghosh further criticized the administration, stating that it was resorting to unlawful methods to illegally trap and arrest opposition leaders in order to benefit the ruling party.
